Australian Centre of the Moving Image (ACMI)

Address:

Federation Square, Flinders Street, Melbourne VIC 3000 (inside Fed Square)

Vibe:

Home of CTEQ and MIFF and screens lots of director / genre retrospective throughout the year.


Astor Theatre

Address:

1 Chapel Street, St Kilda VIC 3182

Vibe:

Lots of doubles, 35mm, 70mm and cult screenings.


Balwyn Cinema (Palace)

Address:

231 Whitehorse Road, Balwyn VIC 3103

Vibe:

Big Palace screen that services the Eastern suburbs. It is home to all the Palace ethnographic festivals, longer than usual cinema seasons and old Hollywood films on weekends in the matinee timeslot.


Brighton Bay Cinema (Palace)

Vibe:


Tiny Palace cinema in Brighton Bay that plays older skewing kino. They run old-Hollywood films on weekends sometimes.


Brunswick Picture House

Address:

510-512 Sydney Rd, Brunswick VIC 3056

Vibe:

New cinema on Sydney Road, playing first run arthouse and bigger films mainly on second run.


Capitol Theatre

Address:

113 Swanston Street, Melbourne, Vic, 3000

Vibe:

Sporadically screens films but one of MIFF’s main kinos.


Chinatown Cinema

Address:

287 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne VIC 3000

Vibe:

Home of asian cinema in Melbourne and also the monthly Asian Cinema Collective screening. Will also screen mainstream titles with Chinese subs & dubs.

Cinema Nova

Address:

9 Gordon Street, Elsternwick VIC 3185

Vibe:

Biggest arthouse cinema in Melbourne. Plays mostly everything and is home to some film fests and film club nights. Their cheap Monday tickets a must of under 23s and themed choc-tops are a highlight.


Classic Cinema

Vibe:

Big arthosue cinema in Elsternwick, home of JIFF, Europa Europa, Children’s Film Fest amonst others and screens both arty and mainstream films.

Como Cinema (Palace)

Address:

Level 1, The Como Centre, 299 Toorak Road, South Yarra VIC 3141


Vibe:

The HQ of Palace Cinemas and also home to the Persian Film Festival when it comes to Melbourne.


Eclipse Cinema

Address:

32 Wellington St, Collingwood VIC 3066

Vibe:

Single screen in Collingwood. Lots of second-run arthouse and rep titles showing.

Kino Cinema (Palace)

45 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000


Vibe:

Best cinema in Melbourne.


Lido Cinema

Address:

675 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn VIC 3122

Vibe:

A great cinema  on Glenferrie road, Hawthorn. The Lido di Hawthorn is home to many fests, all released arthouse titles and lots of event screenings.

Penny Lane Cinema (Palace)

Address:

17 Puckle St, Moonee Ponds VIC 3039

Vibe:

New arthouse screen in Melbourne’s inner north-west. Similar program to Pentridge where they’ll screen the bigger arthouse films and most mainstream titles too.  


Pentridge Cinema (Palace)

Address:

1 Champ Street, Coburg VIC 3058

Vibe:

Palace’s main multiplex screen that screens both arthouse and mainstream films.  



Rivoli Cinema (Village)

Address:

200 Camberwell Rd, Hawthorn East VIC 3123

Vibe:

6-screen art-deco cinema run by multiplex chain Village Cinema. Will mostly just play mainstream films but will play the bigger arthouse films (think Palme d’Or winners).


Sun Theatre

Address:

8 Ballarat Street, Yarraville VIC 3013

Vibe:

Big arthouse and mainstream cinema in Melboure’s glitzy western suburb of Yarraville.



Thornbury Picture House

Address:

802 High Street, Thornbury VIC 3071

Vibe:

Great single screen cinemas on the top of High St in Thornbury. Home of Unknown Pleasures screenings and a music film festival amongst other things. Also a great bar attached to it, especially in summer.

Westgarth Cinemas (Palace)

89 High Street, Northcote VIC 3070

Vibe:


Palace’s smallest cinema and leans more mainstream than the other Palace’s - mainly due to the cinema’s size. Cinema 1 is one of the nicest cinemas in Melbourne though.


Fomo Cinemas

Address:

5 Bluestone Wy, Brunswick East VIC 3057

Vibes:

A cinema where you can order food to your seat. Based on the Alamo Drafthouse in NYC, this doesn’t quite work and the food isn’t very good but it’s also a lot of fun.

Artist Film Workshop

Screens celluloid films around town. Usually presents monthly screenings at The Brunswick Green in Brunswick.

Asian Cinema Collective

A dedicated cinema club screening Asian cinema, both new and old. Hosts monthly screenings at Chinatown Cinema in the CBD and regularly programs at Eclipse Cinema.

Balam Balam Screening Space

An independent screening space in Brunswick, located near Woolworths. Rug up in colder weather and BYO.

Chinese Independent Film Foundation

Screens films from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong at Lido Cinemas and ACMI.


Cine-Club

A peripatetic screening night run by Digby Houghton, appearing in various backstreets of Carlton.




Continued:

Dogmilk

A filmmaking and screening collective from Melbourne’s south. Regularly screens at Misc in the CBD and has also presented programs at ACMI and other cinemas.


Hitlist

Screens a mix of multimedia work, including cinema, video, music videos, and other screen media. Programs rotate across venues such as The Grace, The Pontian Club, and Misc.

Melbourne Horror Film Society

Screens horror films in Brunswick.

Static Vision

Based at Static Vision HQ and the LidA micro-cinema. Operates as a screening space, festival, distributor, and collective.

Trash Night

Often runs day-long festivals of essential trash cinema at Static Vision HQ in Brunswick West.
